PROCEDURAL WORKSHOP

The brief called for a semi-outdoor workshop to be constructed from a predefined set of waste timber elements.
I began with a detail: exploring how these existing beams - of different shapes and sizes - could be connected to one another. The result, after extensive testing, is a timber flitch plate connected with dowels.
This allowed for the creation of trusses from the elements, and working with computer science students I developed a python script to iterate truss forms from the lengths of timber present in the set. Examples of these iterations are shown on the far right.
The images and drawings on this page illustrate the ‘ideal’ form: what the python script was aiming to attain. In reality, the trusses
are deformed, which would add a degree of complexity to the overall form. The intention was to design a model and a system which could, theoretically, be repeated with any given set of timber.
